Coming Back and Moving Forward

Neetu Jhamb’s return, through the ReEntry Program, is the second time she’s come back since she originally joined J.P. Morgan in the 1990s and most recently, took an 11-year hiatus. Jhamb, who was born in India and lives in Connecticut, started out in 1995 in the IB Analyst Program. She left to join a hedge fund in 1998, returned in 2001 to work in proprietary trading in Merger Arbitrage, and then left to spend time with her family in 2004. Last year, with her kids now older and in school, she found herself home, bored and missing the work she once did, she says. When Jhamb saw on Facebook that two of her classmates from the IB Analyst Program were running M&A teams, the news inspired her, and she started to think about going back to work, and specifically to J.P. Morgan. "The industry is tough right now," Jhamb says, "so the idea that J.P. Morgan would give me a chance after a decade away from the industry is unheard of, not to mention the amount of support along the way. I can’t say enough good things about the ReEntry Program. It gives you everything you need." Through the program, available to vice presidents and above, Jhamb went through a week of training on topics including advanced Excel and PowerPoint, but also on management styles. She then took a spot on the Equity Sales and Trading desk where she currently does Merger Arbitrage research. "I’m loving it," she says. "My job is so dynamic, there’s so much activity, and I’m learning something new every day. The idea that I’m going to work every day, and that it isn’t a boring desk job, inspires me." For others thinking about rejoining the firm, Jhamb says you have to be sure you’re 100% ready. And to successfully transition back into "work mode," she suggests networking as much as possible, and especially with others who have rejoined J.P. Morgan. When asked one word to describe working at the firm, Jhamb says "fun." "I love my job," she says. "But the other thing is, and I’ve been here three separate times, is the people and the culture. Through all the changes and the mergers, the true culture is still here." The 13- to 19-week ReEntry Program offers VPs and above who voluntarily left the workforce the resources and support needed to re-start their careers. It offers networking and mentorship opportunities, a reintroduction to corporate life and a chance to interact with the firm’s leaders. The program started in New York in 2013 and is now global. Those who have been out of the workforce for two years or more are eligible to apply. The JPMorgan Chase Alumni Network is the firm's official alumni program aimed at connecting alumni with each other and with the firm through a website, networking events and other efforts. The Alumni Network website serves as an online resource and a way for alumni to get information, make connections, and find opportunities. This site includes an alumni directory, news and stories, event information, career opportunities, and other resources.
